In recognition of the sum of more than £4000 raised over the past 9 years.

The tenth Lammas Festival will take place on the Western Lawns on 31st July & 1st August 2010.

Lammas is a celebration of the first fruits of the Harvest (Hlaff - mass in Anglo Saxon) the loaf for the mass was made from the first blades of wheat.

John Barleycorn is the "Wheatsheaf" figure sung about in folk song & is the source of our bread and ale.

Hence the dance performed each year in which he is "ritually slain" ready to rise again next year!

The tenth Lammas Festival will take place on the Western Lawns on 31st July & 1st August 2010.

Dear Supporter

Will you help us save lives? By giving us a little bit of your time you could help lifeboat crews around the south coast save lives.

We are looking for assistance at some of the local events in your area, it could be as little as a couple of hours in the year or if you are willing to join our Eastbourne RNLI fundraising committee.

On the 18th June this year the Eastbourne All Weather Lifeboat, The Royal Thames, was requested by Dover Coastguard to launch to assist a twenty-one foot sports boat with engine failure.  Although it was a sunny day there was a force 4 westerly blowing and the sea state was choppy.  On arrival, six miles east of Sovereign Harbour a member of the lifeboat crew was transferred over to the sports boat to attach a towline and check over the three people on board.  One had suffered a knock to the head and one other was suffering from seasickness, the lifeboat crewmember administered first aid and oxygen. The lifeboat towed the casualty back to Sovereign Harbour where the three people on board the sports boat were handed over to the paramedics.

More recently, on Sunday 29th November The Royal Thames spent two hours in the rough seas.  The crew were training in Man Overboard techniques and Rough Weather handling.  That same day Wexford inshore lifeboat capsized during a training exercise off the Wexford coast. Two crewmembers managed to stay in contact with the upturned lifeboat and were winched to safety by the Irish Coast Guard helicopter while a third crew member was recovered a mile and a half north east of the scene by Rosslare RNLI lifeboat. All three are recovering well from their experience.

The lifeboat crews are volunteers and they give up their time willingly to train and rescue those in distress around our coastline and on some inland waters.

Although you already support us financially, which we would like to thank you for, your time and assistance is also valuable to us. By donating some of your time to us, you will be helping us provide the crews and lifeguards with the equipment and the training they need to save lives. Forthcoming events so far confirmed are shown over leaf.

A man and his wife, who had been rescued by a local lifeboat said

“We gave what we could afford but could never afford what was given”
