Eastbourne RNLI Sea Safety

Terry Colbran

The Eastbourne Lifeboat Sea Safety Officer (LSSO)

The Role of the LSSO ( Lifeboat Sea Safety Officer ) is to promote the aims of the RNLI in saving lives by changing the attitudes and behaviour of Leisure Boat owners, and to promote the RNLI as being recognised as the leading provider of Sea Safety information.

This is done several ways, one is by an individual one to one talk by a qualified Sea Check Advisor to Leisure Boatowners about their equipment onboard the Boat and the use of the same, called a
Safety Equipment Advisory Check ( Sea Check ), another is by giving Presentations to all types of Clubs etc. connected to the Leisure Boating industry on the Use and Servicing of Life Jackets, the Use and Types of Flares available to the leisure Boat owner and also General Sea Safety talks briefly covering all of the aspects of above.

Every year our voluntary lifeboat crews respond to 8,000 or so incidents, many of which could have been prevented with simple safety precautions. Over half of these launches are to leisure craft.

We believe that more lives can be saved, with fewer lifeboat rescues needed, if leisure craft users are more safety conscious.

Sea Safety Guide aims to help you enjoy your time at sea safely so that you don't become one of our statistics.

To obtain one of the Sea Safety complete guide booklets with a interactive CD-ROM, telephone 0800 328 0600.

For individual and confidential sea safety advice contact the Eastbourne Sea Safety Officer on 07860362367
